Port Augusta

Drove via Melrose to Port Augusta – must go back to that old town next trip around. Love the trees with their strange nobbly fat trunks.
Down through another gorge but nowhere near as narrow and winding.  The port is in a vast desert like flat landscape surrounded by hills. Not a very inspiring place. Caravan Park is well fenced off and the gate is locked every night at 9.30 – 7am. Was quite noisy – could hear people yelling and a 'hoon car' but the footy club is near and dinner on Friday nights so …..
Drove to Quorn – did think of taking the train but 2 hours up there, 2 hours to fill in and 2 hours back....... maybe another time. Managed to see it  though! A fire truck pacing it along the road as well.  Five hotels in the main street - so typical of  many (now) small towns.
I have seen so many old wagons all over SA – and to think those wheels are scarce as hens teeth in NZ! Huge areas of  saltbush around here - almost looks as though it has been planted - cant imagine anything else growing.
Stocked up on the last of stuff for next stage of trip, plus fuel and 1 diesel can. Found a better fold up chair also. Got a new plastic cover for one of the van side lights - and a spare. No idea how it got broken - no scratches anywhere so maybe a stone?
Certainly a change in temperature again after the cool damp Easter at Point Turton. Now very warm  dry heat. Not cool at night but I am told it will be further north.
